Short answer: Aluminum is the material to choose in West Chester, PA when you want the look of black iron without rust or repainting. It satisfies most front-yard “open fence” rules, it can serve as a pool barrier when built to code, and it suits brick and serpentine-stone houses in the borough. It gives no privacy, and it is lighter than steel.
Stroll along a borough block lined with Italianate brick or green serpentine stone and you will notice how often a low black fence finishes the front of the house. 76 FENCE West Chester installs aluminum fencing for front yards, pools, gardens and property lines across West Chester, PA and the surrounding townships. Here is why it fits so many local situations, and where its limits are.
Why does aluminum fit so many front-yard rules?
Because township codes around West Chester usually require front-yard fences to be low and mostly open, and a picket-style aluminum fence is open by design.
The details vary from one municipality to the next, which is why we check the exact rule for your address before ordering. A few examples from current codes:
| Municipality | Front-yard rule (summary) |
|---|---|
| West Goshen | 4 ft max, non-solid, at least as much open space as structure; permit for every fence |
| Westtown | 5 ft max in the front setback area, open fence only, at least 10 ft from the future right-of-way |
| East Whiteland | 4 ft max, at least 50% open; no fence within 10 ft of the front lot line |
| Uwchlan | 36 in max, or ornamental up to 6 ft if at least 75% open |
A standard 4-ft aluminum picket meets the intent of each of these, though setbacks and sight triangles still apply at corners. Our front-yard fence rules guide compares more townships, and the West Goshen and Uwchlan pages cover those two in depth.
Will black aluminum look right on a historic home?
In most cases, yes. Metal fencing that mimics wrought iron is one of the choices generally considered compatible with historic houses, alongside painted wood picket.
On a historic-district lot, a street-side fence may also need HARB sign-off alongside the borough’s $50 zoning review; we find out before placing the order. Simple pickets with flat or spear tops and plain posts usually read as more period-appropriate than heavy ornament. If you are weighing it against real iron, see aluminum vs. wrought iron.

Can an aluminum fence be your pool barrier?
Yes, when it is built to the pool barrier code. Pennsylvania’s Uniform Construction Code adopts the 2018 ISPSC, and aluminum pool fencing is designed around its main requirements.
- Barrier at least 48 inches high, measured on the side away from the pool.
- No opening that a 4-inch sphere can pass through.
- Bottom gap no more than 2 inches over grass or soil.
- Gates open outward, away from the pool, and are self-closing and self-latching.
- A latch release lower than 54 inches goes on the pool side, at least 3 inches below the top.
Some townships add their own rules. Birmingham’s code, for example, at the time of writing calls for a 4- to 6-ft pool fence with no aperture over 16 square inches, and Westtown requires a permit for any pool enclosure fence. See pool fences and our PA pool fence code guide.
How does aluminum handle Pennsylvania weather?
Very well above ground. Aluminum does not rust, and the powder-coated finish resists the humidity and road salt splash that work on painted steel.
The ground is still the ground. Posts need to go to the frost depth your township requires, which in Pennsylvania ranges from about 30 to 42 inches by municipality according to footingdepth.com, or freeze-thaw cycles can push them out of line and throw gates off their latch. Typical guidance for metal fences is 20 to 30 years or more, with touch-ups to the finish every 3 to 5 years where it has been nicked. Many aluminum panels can also be racked to follow a gentle slope, which helps on rolling Chester County lots; see fences on a slope.
Is aluminum strong enough for dogs?
For most dogs, yes. A 4- or 5-ft aluminum fence with pickets close enough together keeps a typical family dog in the yard. For very large dogs, persistent jumpers or dogs that lean on the fence, a heavier-duty grade, a taller fence where code allows it, or a different material may be the better choice. We go over that at the walkthrough.
Every aluminum fence we install carries the manufacturer’s warranty, which we honor; details are on the warranty page.
