Short answer: Galvanized chain link is the most economical way to enclose a large area in West Chester, PA. It is strong enough for dogs, quick to install, and typically lasts 15 to 20 years or more. It offers no privacy and is not welcome everywhere, since historic streets and some front yards call for something more decorative, but for backyards, kennels and commercial lots it is hard to beat.
Chain link does not get much attention, but it solves real problems: a half-acre backyard in Westtown that needs to hold two dogs, a ball field, a storage yard off Route 202, or a garden that needs a sturdy frame. 76 FENCE West Chester installs galvanized chain link for homes and businesses throughout West Chester, PA and the nearby townships. Where does chain link make the most sense?
Wherever you need to enclose a lot of ground securely and economically, and privacy is not the goal.
Large backyards and dogs
Chain link does not rot, gives a dog nothing to chew through, and lets you see the yard from the house. See dog fences.
Commercial and industrial
Warehouses, utility yards and lots where security and cost lead. See commercial fencing.
Pool barriers
Chain link can meet the 2018 ISPSC if the mesh is no larger than 1¾ inches and the barrier and gates follow the rest of the code.
Built for heavy use
Commercial runs typically use heavier posts and fabric, and can carry security features where the zoning allows. Gates can be sized for trucks and equipment.
For businesses that also need a trash-area screen, we build dumpster enclosures too.

How does galvanized chain link handle our weather?
Very well. The zinc coating protects the steel, and an open mesh lets wind, snow and leaves pass through instead of loading the fence.
Humidity does not swell or rot it, which is why typical lifespan guidance for chain link is 15 to 20 years or more. Over time the zinc slowly weathers; the first signs of age are usually dull or rust-spotted fabric near the ground, where grass clippings and soil hold moisture against it. Keep the bottom of the fence clear, and trim vines before they climb into the mesh.
Below grade, the same rules apply as for any fence: posts go to the frost depth your township requires, which Pennsylvania lets each municipality set. In the schist uplands around West Chester, post holes often hit rock; the rocky soil guide explains how crews deal with it.
Where might chain link be restricted?
Mainly in front yards, historic settings and some HOA communities. Back and side yards are rarely a problem.
- Front yards. Downingtown reportedly prohibits chain link in front yards; confirm with the borough. See Downingtown.
- Historic district. Chain link facing a historic street is commonly discouraged by Pennsylvania review boards, and a visible fence in the West Chester district may need HARB review.
- Associations. Many HOA guidelines limit fence materials and colors; black coated chain link is sometimes accepted where galvanized is not. Our HOA approval help covers the paperwork.
What does chain link cost?
Less than most materials per foot, though published ranges vary widely. HomeGuide lists chain link at about $9 to $30 per installed foot nationally. Ergeon, drawing on more than 1,400 of its own installs as of May 2026, reports $32 to $71 per foot with a median around $44, and notes Mid-Atlantic prices run about 1.5 times those in the Southeast. Local quotes depend on height, gauge, gates and ground conditions, and the free estimate gives you a real number. The fence cost guide compares materials.
What height and gates should you plan for?
Most residential chain link is 4 to 6 feet tall, and the gates matter as much as the fence.
Six feet is the common residential limit in side and rear yards around West Chester, PA, and front yards are usually held to about 4 feet, so plan the height by location. For dogs, a 5- or 6-ft back fence is typical. Think about what has to pass through: a single walk gate wide enough for a wheelbarrow or mower, and a double drive gate if a truck, trailer or tractor ever needs access to the back of the lot. Gates are where chain link wears first, so heavier frames and good hinges pay off. See gate installation for options.
Galvanized or black?
Galvanized costs less and lasts a long time; black vinyl-coated costs more but visually recedes into lawn and trees. If the fence will be seen from the house or the street, it is worth comparing the two side by side at the estimate.
